A really long time. And I don't have a solid reason. Just with releases and new stories, my blog got away from me.

The three minute catch up: My first ever novel, Ravenborne, was released August 23rd from Samhain and will be out in print this coming July. July the third. Yay!! This was a huge accomplishment for me. But, this post wasn't meant to be promo.

My big news is I've actually pick up the sequel to Ink in the Blood and am finishing it. I must admit, I love my fantasy world but I love Ink's world just a tiny bit more. I think my ties to it are stronger. It's nearer and dearer to my heart. And that's what has kept me from finishing it. But, over the last month or so, I put on my big girl panties and got down to business.

Wait!! That didn't come out right. What I mean to say is, I'm a writer and a writer doesn't not write a story because it's hard or because they're worried they won't get it right. You just work that much harder while writing the story. So far it's going well. I'm exhausted every night from working, but it's a good exhausted. And this is quickly becoming my favorite story. I'm sitting at close to 19,000 words as of today but this has to be done by the end of Feb. as I have big plans for it. I'm going to a conference in Dallas at the end of March and want to pitch it to an agent. And I want to submit it to a couple places. I'll keep you guys posted as to how the story's going. Please keep your fingers crossed for me :)

What I Did Over the Summer

I can’t believe school starts next week. But we just had such a fantastic summer, the time has flown by.

We went to Cincinnati Ohio for my first ever conference, to Chicago to visit a friend eat hot dogs and swim at a beach, Indianapolis to visit the children’s museum, and to the local pool more times than I can count. My youngest had his very best friend over to say goodbye before he, the friend, moved across the country. We had a sleep over with the nieces. We went to see Toy Story 3, Last Airbender, and they went to see Sorcerer’s apprentice last weekend. I visited my home town twice and ate at the pizza place where my husband I met both times (which is a lot for me seeing as I don’t make it back to my home town at all some years). Oh, and I submitted my first ever completed novel. That was just last week though so I’m not expecting to hear anything back anytime soon.

Yeah, it’s been a fun summer, but I think I’m ready for school. I think I’m ready to have a quiet house. They start out with something along the lines of: Look for a man who finds you beautiful not sexy. Then they go on into a list of actions or qualities that make a man the ‘perfect’ type man. And every time I read one I have the same question. What makes beautiful better than sexy?

My first reaction was that sexy, being more of a physical attribute, somehow objectifies the woman. But, as I thought about it more, I realized that there are thousands of things that people find sexy that have nothing to do with appearance. Like I love to watch sci-fi and sports. Some men find that sexy in a female, but it has nothing to do what I look like. So why is sexy wrong?

Now, I don’t usually obsess over silly Facebook posts, but as I kept seeing this message repeated and rephrased it kept digging at me. So I started going through examples of what I’d find ‘sexy’ and what would be ‘beautiful’. And the main difference between the words I came up with is that ‘sexy’, to me, implies some level of arousal where as ‘beauty’ doesn’t necessarily.

Men on motorcycles are sexy. A dress hanging in the store is beautiful. A verse from a poetry book is beautiful. Tattoos are sexy. But that only left me more confused. Why wouldn’t you want your mate to find you arousing? I’m not sure I’ll ever have this one figured out. Maybe you can help me to understand. Why should I wait for a guy who calls me beautiful instead of falling for one who finds me sexy?

Karma and Answered Prayers

My mother always told me to be careful with my prayers. Some things, she'd tell me, can only be given through work and sacrifice. Like patience. It can't be given. It can only be strengthened by working through trials that test it. I knew she was right. And I'd pray anyway. 'Cause I really need to work on my patience. And, as I think any of my writer friends can attest to, I fell into a line of work that's giving me plenty of trials and tests to strengthen that virtue :)

I think the same can be said about Karma. I'm a firm believer that you reap what you sow in life. Not only that, but that you find what you're looking for. The trick is knowing what you're asking from the universe. Just because you tell yourself you want a peaceful life, doesn't mean that's what you're actions are telling the cosmos you desire. And sometimes, just as with patience, some things can't just be given, they have to be worked for.

I used peace because that's what I'm searching for. What I realized this week was I wasn't really working for it. There are certain people in my life that I allow to bait me. But I didn't realize this was a problem because I rarely ever rose to the bait. I'd just ignore their taunts. Or, at least, I'd ignore them publicly. In my heart, I'd still let them dig at me. I was giving the illusion of peace without really living it.

I'm not sure how you get past the sting of an insult. I'm not sure how you really truly let some comments go. I mean, I know intellectually that you accept some people aren't going to like you and don't give their words weight. It's the emotional aspect I'm having a hard time with. I'd like to think this post is the first step. Knowing I have to let go of the anger and resentment if I'm going to find peace. Something tells me meditation and limited time with those who are baiting will be the second. The third? I'm not sure yet. Hopefully it'll come to me when I'm ready for it.

I'm Guest Blogging

Hey everyone. I hope you can stop by. I'll add a link first thing in the morning. In the mean time, if you want to read the blurb or an excerpt to Dragonborne, I have them here. It was also reviewed by Long and Short reviews today. I'm very happy they liked it and hope my next story will indeed be a novel :)

Also one of my friends, Robyn Bachar, had her novel, Blood, Smoke and Mirrors, released by Samhain today! Huge congrats to her. It sounds fantastic and I've been really looking forward to reading it. Wanna know more? http://www.mybookstoreandmore.com/blood-smoke-mirrors-p-5601.html

Hope it's sunny where ever you are today :)

And the Winner is...Sonya!

Congratulations Sonya. I returned my edits to my editor. Yay! No, I’m not done with edits, I just returned a round of them. And I know knowing more edits are on the way should be a downer, but it isn’t. Here’s the thing, I don’t mind edits. I actually kind of like them. Why?

First, because I know the editor liked the story, that’s why they agreed to pick it up. So I never take anything they say personally. I realize my work isn’t perfect, that I get too close to see where it needs fixed, and I really don’t want to look like an idiot when the story is released. So I appreciate the time and energy my editors put into my work.

Second, because some of the mistakes I make are funny as hell and I’ve never had a problem laughing at myself. If you’ve chatted with me on-line (or in person) I’ve probably told you some of these, but I can’t resist repeating myself. They’re just too good. So here goes, some of my best typos:

Instead of imitate, I once used immolate, which means to kill as a sacrifice. I’m sure my hero would not have approved of the heroine immolating his mount. It probably would have pissed him off, but it made my writers group laugh hysterically.

Instead of bowl, I once used bowel. Not that I’m terribly prissy or anything, but I do believe soup tastes better when eaten from a bowl. Just saying.

Instead of vile creature, I once used vial creature. Any dragon that could actually fit in a vial would probably not be much of a threat. Sophie would argue that one with me. But she just likes to argue.

Instead of stairs, I once used stars. Try climbing those sometime.

Instead of dining, I (more than) once used dinning. I’m not even sure what dinning is, or what a dinning room would encompass, which is sad seeing as I look it up every time my writers group calls me on it.

So there you have ‘em, some of my best typos. Oh, and one of my most common mistakes…Clinch does not mean the same thing as Clench. I think I have that one down now. I’ve actually started doing word searches in my works for Clinch, because I hardly ever mean that one.

Hope you’re all having a great week!

Interview At Believing is Seeing

Today I’m being interviewed at Believing is Seeing. And it’s going up against two other gorgeous covers, one of which is from Larissa Ione’s If you haven’t read her, I highly recommend you giving her work a chance. It’s dark and edgy and just fantastically written. Actually, I have the Embrace the Shadows blog to thank for introducing me to her stories. I won Desire Unchained, the second book in her Demonica Another reason I’m excited? The Clash of the Covers has always been my favorite part of the blog. Don’t get me wrong, I love the interviews and the guest blogs, but I really look forward to the clash every week, and I can’t remember the last time I missed one.

That means one week from today Ink will be available to buy and download—Yay! To celebrate I’m starting a contest today. On March 1st I’m going to give away a download of Ink in the Blood and a bag of Ink swag (pictured on the right side of this post) to someone. All you have to do to enter is post your favorite food in the comments section of this blog entry before Midnight central time on Feb 28th. Then, on March 1st, I’ll randomly choose a comment and post the winners name. So make sure you check back on March 1st to see if you’ve won. I’ll try to post the winner as early as possible.

I’m going to get the ball rolling. My favorite food is cheesecake. I can’t resist the stuff. Once, my husband and I got a cheesecake for our anniversary. We both had a piece for dessert and then put it away for the night. The next day he went off to work and I snacked on a half a piece for breakfast, a half a piece for a mid-morning snack, a half a piece for lunch…well, I think you can see where this is going. When he came home, I was horribly sick. It didn’t take him long to figure out why. He went into the fridge and saw I’d eaten half the cheesecake. After that, I wasn’t able to look at cheesecake for a year or so, but I’m all better now.

Now it’s your turn. Are you a sweets kind of person, savory? What’s the food you can’t resist?

My Website Has Been Redesigned…

And that makes me happy! My original site was serviceable, and all the links worked, but it wasn't dynamic. It was actually a hassle to update, which is why it was never updated. It also wasn’t very polished, in my opinion. So my husband did a complete redesign for me. Isn’t he great?

I have to say, I love the site. I love the colors and the pictures and the excerpt link that has the book cover on it. But the thing I love the most, most people will never see. My husband, knowing I’m not the most computer savvy person, designed a custom content management program just for me. It’s so cool. I have a table for my news, my works, and my links. Whenever I want to update, I just open the program, edit it, and then FTP into my site and upload the new info. It’s so cool and I'm very grateful for it.

In other news, Ink is being release a week from Monday. Yay! In celebration I’m going to be having a contest. It’ll start tomorrow and will run to release day, so check back on the blog tomorrow to get all the details. In the mean time, if you have a moment and want to check out the new site, you can either click on this link, or click on Ink's cover in the side bar.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Community

My husband came home a couple months ago and told me that a friend of a friend was an erotic writer. My response, “Really, what’s her name?” Let’s face it it’s a relatively small community and, although I don’t write erotic (because it takes a very good writer to write erotic and I’m just not there yet) I do read it and I know several people who write it. And if I didn’t know her, chances were I knew someone who knew someone that did. Six degrees and all that.

He told me her name, and I didn’t recognize it.

“Well,” he said, “I think she’d just starting out and my friend made it seem like she didn’t really know many people. My friend was actually wondering if she could pass along your name and e-mail to her. I told her it’d be fine.”

I loved that he didn’t have to ask, that he already knew the answer. Of course it was fine. It was better than fine. After all, the community I’d discovered had become my favorite aspect of the writing journey. Yes, the first contract I was offered was great, and getting to see covers with my name on them had been indescribable, but none of that would have happened without the guidance and support I’d received from the other authors I’d met along the way.

“She seemed to think her friend thought other authors didn’t help each other out very often. That it was very competitive.”

That statement saddened me because it’s simply not true. I mean, I'm sure there’s competition when an anthology call goes out, and yes there’s always the hope I’ll make the cut at a certain house, but I’d do whatever I could to help out another author and when I tell them I’m cheering for them and wish them good luck, I honestly mean it. And I think the other authors I’ve met along the way feel the same.

Yes, I want contracts, but I want to earn them because my story’s the best, or because it resonated with an editor, not because there weren’t enough submissions to fill a quota. And when I’m rejected it stings, but I know I was rejected because my story wasn’t good enough, not because other authors had submitted works. I settle in to make it better and then resubmit it elsewhere. It’s one of the ways I work at becoming a better writer.

The exchange made me thankful for the community I'd discovered and reminded me to be grateful for all the help I'd been given. and Ghostsnapper,- who forced me to sit down and write my first sex scene, Suzanne Rock-who’s shown up at blogs and events and cheered me on, Moira Rogers (both of you) for your kind words and repeat tweets, Cora Zane-for your encouragement (especially back in the days when I was Neoindra), E-love-for your unfaltering support, Aubrie Dionne-for coming to visit me at my blog and for the offers of reviewing my work, Sandra Sookoo for your wonderful words about my cover and offering me a guest spot on your blog, and well, I think you get the idea. I don't honestly think I could thank everyone who's touched me over the last two years, and I think that says more than this whole blog does. There are no words to express how much I appreciate everyone’s support and guidance as I stumble along this journey.

BTW she never e-mailed me. That saddened me, too. It’s my sincerest hope that she’ll find a community she’s comfortable with and that it helps her on her journey, as I would be lost without mine.

A Day of Extraordinarily Good News!

<img style="display:block; Yay.

And to help continue the basking, here's the link to my excerpt from Ink, which is being released in just over a month! I can't help it. I'm just not made for cold weather and I pine for the warm days of summer. This year, however, I've decided to do things differently. Instead of pining, I'm going to take a moment to think about all the things about winter that make me happy. Here goes.

1. Slammin' boots. And I got a new pair this year. They're a chestnut brown, knee high, and they have a gold buckle on the top so they look supper cute with tight jeans.

2. Hot chocolate and tea always sound good. These are two of my favorite drinks and it just gets too hot in the summer to drink them, but I can drink them anytime the mood hits me now.

3. Snuggling under a down comforter. Really, is there anything better?

4. With it being so cold outside, I don't feel bad about indulging in more inside activities like, say, reading and writing.

5. Baking! I always do more baking when the thermometer dips and there's nothing like being surrounded by the aroma of something in the oven whether it be sweet or savory.

So, yes, these are my favorite things about winter. Do you have any? Or are you one of the people who prefer the cold and have to come up with a list for scorching days of summer?

M.I.A. ?

When I tell people I'm a writer (I'm actually still getting used to saying the words) they almost always have the same response. "I'd love to write, if only I had the time." I smile and say something encouraging, but all the while a little voice is screaming in the back of my head, "You don't have the time, you find it. You force it if necessary." Yes, I'm a stay at home mom, so I can maybe find a couple extra hours in a day to write. Maybe. Some days. Next year will be different, both my children will be in full time public school, so I'll have whole blocks of time where I don't have to change the channel, switch Wii games, pour juice, fix snacks, read stories, play hide and seek...you get the idea. But that's next year. This year my five year old is still home with me, which means I've got to work my writing around taking care of him, too. It's not that I'm complaining. Really, I'm not. I wouldn't change my life for all the gold in Spain (Does Spain have a lot of gold? I'm not sure about that one, but let's just go with it). But it does get a bit irritating for people to assume I've got oddles of time to write. I don't. Case in point: I haven't written much in the past two months and I know it's because I'm not forcing myself to sit down and write.

A couple months ago, my Godmother passed away. She introduced me to my faith when I was a teen and gave me a home to live in while I was in college. She was one of the most independent and inspirational women I've ever met. So when I came home from the funeral I started cleaning, and running errands, and filling my time with everything but writing. And I had plenty of stuff to fill my days without ever opening Word for anything but edits. I had so much stuff to do, I didn't even realize I was avoiding writing until a week ago. So today, I am forcing myself to sit down and write. Could I find other things to do? Absolutely, but I'm a writer.

On the brighter side of things, Ink in the Blood is complete and has an official release date of March, 1st 2010. And even after all the rewrites and rounds of edits, I found I still like the story. Also, I've talked a bit about my dragon/shifter/fantasy novella on here in the past...I'm pleased to say Samhain offered me a contract for it. I don't have a release date for that one yet, but I will keep you posted.

So that's from here. Hopefully I'll get the sequel to Ink and my sci-fi piece done and will be able to submit them soon.

I hope this holiday season finds you surrounded by the comfort and joy of the people you love.

Chandra

Upcoming Event!

I’m trying to limit my exclamation point usage since my editor pointed out eight of them in one argument, but as this is my first event, I think it warrants one. It’s okay. I know the story was a bit rushed and it needed expanding here or there. That’s one of the major problems I have with deadlines. It has to be done on that day, so even if I know there are problems I still turn it in and hope for the best. All in all, I’m rather proud of my first attempt at a space opera. I think it’s a good story with a good plot and good characters so I think I’m going to expand the areas that feel rushed and submit it elsewhere when it’s done. No rush this time, though. It takes what it takes.

But now that I accomplished my goal of completing and submitting a space opera on a deadline, I’m totally allowing myself to go back to comfortable territory. It’s back to Izzy’s world I go. I’ve been playing around with her sister’s story for awhile now (I actually started writing Nikki’s story before Izzy’s) and I can’t wait to finish it. It helps that the editor expressed interest in a possible sequel to Ink in the Blood. Gives me a bit of motivation. I know, it seems like I have plenty of time to plan the trip, but that’s what I always think and then we’re scrambling to find a hotel at the last moment. Not this time! I will get a good rate at a good hotel, preferably one with a pool. Thank goodness I have a fantastic husband who doesn’t mind eating convenience food from time to time. I honestly don’t know how I’d cope without him.

Well, I’m off to get my space opera done. The submission deadline is Aug. 10th and I have so much yet to do, including a synopsis.

New Projects and a Release Date!

There’s something about summer. I always feel more motivated to get things done. So what did I do? I decided I was going to write a space opera novella in under two months. Why? Because that’s the submission call deadline, of course J I’m actually off to a good start. I’ve written 2k and it has to be between 25-30k. As long as I finish the first draft in June, that gives me all of July to do rewrites (minimum of four solid rewrites) and the first week of August to clean up format and write the synopsis. Easy peasy, right? It’s okay for you to laugh, I am too.

In other news…I have a tentative release date for Ink. It’s going to be March 1st 2010! Yay! I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see the cover (yes, I know it’s going to probably be about six months before I have a cover, but I’m still waiting anxiously).

Oh, and I got my e-reader. Thank you, very much sweetheart! I adore it! I’ve already downloaded and read three of the e-books I’ve been putting off because I didn’t want to be tied to a computer to read them.

All in all, good times. year ago, I had one e-mail account. That was it! No blog, no social networking site, no twitter, just one e-mail account. Today I have three e-mail accounts, two Facebook pages, two blogs (one of which is being horribly neglected as of late), a twitter account, and a website. And, of course, to keep up with all this, I’m getting a smart phone tomorrow! It’s something I swore I’d never do. I’d always said the internet was there for my convenience not the other way around. But with submissions out, editors e-mailing information, and witty friends, I feel compelled to be connected even when I’m not at home. Yet, as I sat down to check my e-mail today, I couldn’t help but think back to the simpler days and wonder if my life really requires so much tech.

It seemed such a slippery slope to get from where I was to where I am. It all started with me joining an online forum. There I found friends who were facing the same struggles I was, writer’s block, rejections, and unfinished manuscripts. And they gave me the encouragement and the resources I needed to rewrite and resubmit until I got it right, and got a contract. While chatting with them, I realized how useful a blog would be. Not to promote, but just somewhere for me to talk about whatever is on my mind. Being a writer can be isolating, especially when you only have an eight year old and a four year old to bounce ideas off of all day. So I started my first blog.

By this time I was drifting away from the group. I loved the people, but realized I would probably never be published by this particular publisher. But I knew I would miss the friends I had made, so I started a Facebook page. That way I got updates on them and could continue talking to them outside the boundaries of the forum.

The next big change happened when I got my contract. In the ‘publisher’s welcome pack’ it had a line about needing a website. Me? I’ve only had one thing accepted, do I really need a website? They seemed to think so, and it is a nifty thing to have, so I put a website. And since I’m writing under a pen name, that meant I needed another Facebook page to get my name out there.

So yes, I guess it turns out I do need the tech. Well, everything but Twitter. I actually signed up for that to enter a contest. I didn’t win btw, but I do like the conversation feel of it, so I’m going to keep it.

There are days I feel overwhelmed by the internet. There are so many interesting blogs, people, articles, etc. And there are days where I don’t get any real writing done because of it. But that’s a lack of disciple on my part. In the end, I can’t imagine being able to do my job without it. To be honest, I wouldn’t have a job without it.

Why Asura?

When I first started writing the Inked series, it was going to be about demons and angels, but as I started researching demons I stumbled across the name Asura. It was a beautiful name that had a delicate flow to it that I loved. So I dug deeper.

Asura are sometimes considered demons in modern Hinduism, which is why they came up in my search. But, as I continued to dig, I discovered the term 'demon' wasn't quite right for this race. Asura are, to the best of my ability to determine, divine beings that have great weaknesses in will. They’re drawn to excess and power, which tends to lead to corruption and evil. But corruption and evil aren't certainties. Asura have free will, and some have been known for their piousness. And that’s what I loved about them.

To have a good nature and do good is commendable, but nothing noteworthy. You are living within your nature. But to have a nature that draws you to the darker things in life, and yet still do good—that’s remarkable and something worth note.

So, in my stories of the Asura, that’s what I focus on, the constant struggle over the darkness that pulls at them and their desire to rise above their nature. As it turns out, I’m not writing about demons. I'm writing about overcoming them.

<img width='1' height='1' If there’s a word that’s almost, but not quite the same, as the word I want, I’ll pick that word a good 30% of the time, making the most delightfully awful sentences. I would buy that it’s my own laziness, except I really am trying to catch the mistakes. I’ve gotten to the point of looking up any word I’m not completely sure about, just to make sure it’s the right one. But still, they slip by me.

Some of my more memorable ones: I once used immolate instead of emulate, thing instead of thigh, bowel instead of bowl, and, most recently, I used shutter instead of shudder. What makes the typos so funny is half the time they work in the sentence, but you can tell they aren't right. Take the immolate one. I was trying to say my heroine emulated the hero’s mount. Meaning she tried to jump onto the horse like he had. I ended up saying she sacrificially killed his horse. It could have happened, but it didn’t. And the thing-thigh one...well, let's just say that one had my writers group laughing so hard there were actually tears involved.

I’ve gotten used to laughing at them, too. After all, it’s apparently part of me, part of who I am. I’ve also gotten used to running my work by at least three critic partners that understand who I am, are used to looking for my quirky typos, less an editor read that my heroine drank from a bowel instead of a bowl.

Sigh…

Writing Huzzah!

I’m really excited because I wrote about 2K yesterday. I know, it may not seem like very much, but it’s the longest stretch I’ve written in the past week. I don’t know why I’m having such a hard time getting this thing done. I love the story, the characters, and the world. And I’ve got the plot and twists all mapped out. My guess is it’s a combination of things that have nothing to do with the story at all, and everything to do with two little kidlets running around asking for apple juice every time I manage to sit down behind my computer. Regardless, it felt really good to get my heroine out of her ‘femme fatal’ scene. No one should be left with two assassins and a traitor for weeks at a time. Bad writer! Very bad writer! But that’s all resolved now. Unfortunately, life caught up with me shortly after the scene was finished, and I had to leave her in a shower handcuffed. Trust me, it all makes perfect sense when you read it :)

Any other weekend and I’d be all about finishing that scene as well. But it’s mother’s day weekend, and that’s always one of my boys’ favorite weekends. Why? I’d like to think it’s because they love me so much it makes them happy to have a weekend all about me, but realistically it’s because we always go to our local train museum and take a ride on their steam engine trains for both mother’s day and father’s day. Even knowing this, it still makes me happy when they run into our room and ask, “Is it mother’s day yet?” with the excitement usually reserved for Christmas.

I'm hoping to carry on the tradition this year, but with my youngest still a little under the weather, we might have to schedule something else. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

So that’s about it here. I hope you all have a great mother’s day tomorrow, whether it be with trains or tea cups.

Drive-by Promoting

I know promotion is important in this business. And I know it can be daunting trying to come up with new ways to get the word out. But I’ve come to really hate drive-by promoters. So much so, that I’m thinking about removing anyone from my Facebook ‘friend’ list who invites me to join a group or fan club, yet hasn’t taken the time to say hello to me. It’s really a matter of common courtesy.

Think about how you’d act at a conference for a moment. Would you just hand your card to everybody you walked by? No. You stop, smile, engage in a bit of chit-chat, look for an opening, and then, when you’ve established you have something in common, something the other person might benefit from, you offer them your card. It’s really the same concept in the cyber world.

If you want me to join your group, all you have to do is stop at my wall, say hello, say something about me(I’m a sure join if it’s something that shows me you took the time to visit my webpage) and what I might gain from joining said group. Now, really, is that so difficult?

Yes, if you have 2,000 friends it would be a time consuming task, but the people who actually join would be more likely to buy your book, or whatever it is you’re promoting, because they’d feel connected to you somehow.

Now, before what I’m saying is misconstrued, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to put your blog, or website, or whatever it is you want the world to see, in your status. How is this different? Because you’re not soliciting me directly, you’re just putting the info out there for any who might be interested. It’s the difference between a television ad and a person thrusting unwanted flyers into my hands as I walk by them on the street. I don’t know what you do with the flyers you get, but I can tell you what I do with mine…exactly the same thing I’m doing with unsolicited group/fan club invites.

The Novella

Barbara Hancock wrote a lovely blog about the joy of reading novellas on Embrace the Shadows today, and it got me to thinking. Yes, reading novellas is fun. They’re fast-paced, direct, and focus almost exclusively on the hero and heroine. But what about writing them?

My answer is going to surprise most of you, I know, but I actually prefer writing novels. Even though Ink in the Blood is a novella and Samhain saw definite possibilities with Dragonborn, I’m not comfortable writing them. Why? Because they’re hard! And for exactly the same reasons they’re great.

When you’re writing a novella, your focus has to be on the core of the story. It’s so short there’s no room for anything that’s not moving the plot and the hero and heroine forward. But it has to be written with an elegance that reads effortless. To get your characters to move a specific way, in a very brief space, with few plot devices available? I’m sure it comes naturally for some writers, but I’m not one of them.

So why did I write, and rewrite, not one but two of them? Because I was after a greater reward than the finished piece itself. I recognized that my novels tended to ramble too often and relied too heavily on plot devices and contrived characters. My solution was to write something where I only had the story to fall back on. It was a torturous process. I can’t begin to tell you how many rewrites both pieces took to even be presentable. But in the end, I feel my writing is stronger because of it.

Will I continue to write novellas? I am more comfortable writing them than I ever thought I’d be. And Dragonborn, my second one, came to me a lot easier than Ink in the Blood did. So yes, I can see more novellas in my future. But I’m really looking forward to sinking my teeth back into my novels. See if the experiment worked on a larger scale.

Oh, I hope you have a chance to stop by and read the blog that inspired this one. I mean, it’s up and functional, but DH wants to make some changes. It started out with him hating the format I designed it in. But as he kept looking at it, he determined he could improve the design as well. Don’t look for the changes to happen over night, though. He tends toward perfectionism when designing, so his stuff is excellent but it takes a lot of time.

My writing, unfortunately, has slowed to a crawl. I’ve gotten all my forms returned to Lyrical, though, so hopefully I can concentrate on my WIP for the rest of the week. It’s a novel length sequel to Ink. Poor Izzy, after everything she’s been through, you’d think I’d let her live the rest of her days in peace. But really, who gets to live the rest of their days in peace?

Also, I’m hoping to get my novella Samhain requested a rewrite and resubmit on resubmitted within the next week or so. It’s a more traditional fantasy, but when you throw political and religious corruption into a story with shape-shifting dragons and clerics it can get pretty dark.

Oh, and don’t forget to wish Lyrical a happy birthday! They turn one this month and are giving away e-books to celebrate.

Welcome to my blog!

About a year ago, my husband asked me what the difference was between writing as a hobby and writing as a career. I was in the middle of my third, or maybe my fourth, rewrite and snorted rather loudly as I continued to pick apart my sentences.

“This is.”

It was a simple truth to a question I’ve been asked countless times since then.

Anyone who takes the time to write and then rewrites until it’s perfect, is a writer. Anyone who stares at their words until they no longer make sense and fusses over their characters until they’re living people, is a writer. It doesn’t take a contract to make it so.
